Adult Session: Day One

David and Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9:1-13): Grace on Account of Another

Biblical/Theological: In this session, we will look at the biblical and theological themes prominent in the account of David and Mephibosheth. We will pay close attention to the idea of hesed – God’s love, kindness, mercy, and covenant faithfulness. We will trace its meaning through the Scriptures and see how David demonstrates to Mephibosheth what the substitutionary work of God in Christ accomplishes for us.

Practical: In this session, we will examine the interactions between David and Mephibosheth and the major relational influences that prompted their encounter. We will examine how love and mercy intersected in their lives and caused them both to experience the grace and goodness of God in ways that impacted them and can be imported into the way we experience grace and goodness today.

Adult Session: Day Two

The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32): Grace that Leads us Home

Biblical/Theological: In this session, we will look at the biblical and theological themes of God’s character and attributes as Heavenly Father and how He expresses His love towards His children. We will examine what it means to be called a child of God and how the Bible brings to life the theme of God’s love manifested in reconciliation and forgiveness.

Practical: In this session, we will examine the implications of our relationship with a God who allows his people to wander, and yet freely and graciously welcomes them back home. We will look at what it means to be a member of God’s household, how forgiveness is gracious and free, and how we can walk in grace and forgiveness with each other.

Teen Session: Day One

David and Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9:1-13): Grace on Account of Another

In our first session we will look at the story of David and Mephibosheth to launch into a conversation about hesed, or God’s loving kindness, mercy, and commitment to keep His promises to His people. How does King David’s kindness toward Mephibosheth contrast with the quid pro quo nature of this life? How does it compare to the selfless life and actions of Christ on our behalf? How would hesed impact our relationships and present opportunities for others to experience the grace of God?

Teen Session: Day Two

The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32): Grace that Leads us Home

In our second session we look at the story of the prodigal son and pose the question, is this story more familiar to us than the grace that welcomed the son home? We want to use this story to discuss our relationship with God in the household of faith. How does God show His love toward His children as their Heavenly Father? What does it mean to be His children and experience His welcoming forgiveness even when we run away from Him?

Kids Session: Day One

David and Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9:1-13): Grace on Account of Another

Our first kids session will introduce the idea of hesed. We will use interactive story-telling and small groups to consider how Jonathan, David, and Mephibosheth teach us more about God's lovingkindness to us on account of Jesus - and also how we can show God's lovingkindness to others.

Kids Session: Day Two

The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32): Grace that Leads us Home

Our second kids session will continue the theme of hesed as we consider the steadfast love of God shown in Jesus' parable of the prodigal son. Through our activities and continued small groups, we will look at our similarities to the brothers and discuss our need for forgiveness and ability to then forgive others. And we'll marvel at God's patient, constant, forgiving, and enthusiastic love for each one of us!

*Preschool and Kindergarten students will meet in their own class for more age-specific teaching and activities.
